Final Week Before Winter Break

        December has been a busy month in 1P!  Thanks to lots of help from our classroom experts - Julia & Isaac, we have been learning about Hannukah.  We have read several stories, talked about traditions and played the Dreidel game.

        We have also been reading several different versions of The Gingerbread Man and comparing them.  We have been talking about the different elements of the stories and comparing the different characters and endings.  We are very excited to build our gingerbread houses on Wednesday!  Hope to see you there - Wednesday 12/20/17 from 10-11am in 1P!!

         This week, we will be talking about Christmas.  We will read stories and talk about traditions for Christmas!  We will also sing Christmas songs.  

Big News!!  Mrs. P has announced a Read-In for Friday, December 22!!  We are allowed to wear pajamas (but must be dressed warm enough for outdoor recess!!).  We can bring a small blanket, small pillow, small stuffed animal and a few books from home.  These things must fit in our backpack or our winter clothes bag.  We must be able to carry them ourselves.  We will be playing math games in the morning and having our Read- In in the afternoon!!

     This afternoon we had a special activity time with Mrs. Comer.  It was an introduction to Coding, to go along with the national movement - the "Hour of Code" to teach more about Computer Science and Coding.  The students had a mini-lesson with Mrs. Comer and then had to work in small groups.  They had to create a sequence of steps to program the robotic mouse to move across a track they created to get to the cheese.  Check out the pictures and videos below to see what a great job the children did!  Fun and challenging at the same time.  The students will also be coding via some of our iPad games.

    

2nd Week in November

We began to learn about Pilgrims.  We talked, read and learned about Pilgrim life, and what it was like to be a young Pilgrim boy or girl.  We compared ourselves with Pilgrim children to see what was the same and different.  We had a special visit or from Plymouth Plantation

My apologies for falling so far behind with my posts - I am going to do several posts that I willback date to keep you updated with our class happenings.

Beginning of November -

We started the month by getting organized!!  We cleaned up our classroom boxes in which we keep all of our important work, materials and tools for our First Grade Work!!

Then we finished working on our Non-fiction Bat books during Writer's Workshop.  We are working on being very focused during Writer's Workshop!

We have also been having fun during our Fun Friday Time.  Many of us have cashed in our Golden Tickets one week or another to have an extra 5 minutes of Friday Fun Time.  Our favorite activity during Friday Fun Time is doing Rainbow Loom bracelets!!

November is here!!!  Studying our seasonal patterns in Science this year remains interesting as the weather continues to change from summer to fall like weather!!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out and sent in materials for our amazing pumpkin bat craft on Halloween!!  What a good time and such hard-working first graders!!

We will continue to work on our bat Unit next week.  We are researching bats to collect information to write our own non-fiction bat books.  Last week we researched bat habitats.  This week, we will research what they eat and who their enemies are.  We are reading bat books and watching bat videos to collect information.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Conferences the next two Wednesdays.  You will receive your child's status report page for the November report card on the Monday before your conference.  Please look it over and bring any questions or concerns to our conference.  We only have 20 minutes, so I want to make the best use of our time.  Thank you in advance for this.

What a FULL week! 

Highlights -

Starting our non-fiction Bats unit.  We are researching and learning about Bats.  We made Bat diagrams that will be hanging in the hallway outside 1P!

Math - Lots of Math games helping us to work on combinations of numbers up to a total of 15.  Some games are - Double Compare, Double Compare Dots, Roll and Record, Heads and Tails, Peas and Carrots, Three Towers!!

Working with Pam Golden, Sheehan School's Artist in Residence.  We worked with clay to create our animal/people faces!  We loved this and all helped Pam to clean up when we were finished without being asked!  I was so impressed with their kindness and thoughtfulness, everyone earned Gold Tickets for this!!  Check out our pictures below!!
